WHY HELP

Working Towards a Better Tomorrow

According to the Environmental Protection Division, there are 800,000 tons of wasted food sent to the Georgia landfill annually and 48% of this wasted food is sent from metro Atlanta. The issue of wasted food impacts food insecure families and the environment. Based on an article from Southface, 25% of families in Metro Atlanta are food insecure which means that they do not have consistent access to sufficient food. If all the people who had wasted this food had instead sent it to the landfill 579,845 food insecure individuals would have more than enough food for a year. Forbes states that whenever food residuals are sent to the landfill as it spoils a harmful greenhouse gas, methane which is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide, is emitted.
